Certified Nursing Assistants play an important role in the healthcare industry. It takes a particular kind of person to step up to the duties and responsibilities of a CNA. As stressful as this career path may sometimes be, it is incredibly rewarding to be making a big difference in the well-being of patients.
When considering becoming a CNA, it is vital to know what a typical day looks like so you know what to expect. After you put on your scrubs, you will head to your place of work. You will often have to arrive and start your shift by 6:30 AM or 7:00 AM. This is the same time that the previous shift ends, which would have been the night shift.
When you arrive, you will first check into the nurse’s station. This is where you receive your assignments from licensed nurses. You may receive a nursing report with updates stemming from the previous shift.
From there, you begin the core of your CNA duties. These include the following:
You start off waking up the patients and getting them washed. After that, you give them breakfast. After breakfast, you finish dressing and washing your patients. Next is when you heed the calls of any patients requiring assistance with something.
After you cater to all the requests you receive, you get the patients ready for activities such as singing and exercises. You will also be assisting new arrivals into their rooms. You then will help the rest of your patients get ready for lunch.
After lunch, you take vital signs. Finally, you document what you did for the day and head home. Throughout the entirety of the day, you are answering bells and helping with any needs patients may have.
As you can tell, the majority of a CNA’s duties revolve around helping a patient with their daily living. Bathing, feeding, dressing/undressing, and physical therapy are all part of the basic needs for a patient’s positive well-being.
Your shift will generally be eight hours long. However, depending on where you are and what the load is at the time, your shift may be as short as four hours or as long as 12 hours.
A typical day is intense, exhausting, and exhilarating. The profound differences you make in the lives of patients are well worth the challenges of being a CNA.
